Extraordinary reasons why you should use public transportation
2022-04-04 | Environment

In 2019, road transport accounted for 23% of the UK’s domestic nitrogen oxide emissions. Transport remains the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gasses. Transportation accounts for 27% of overall carbon dioxide emissions in the European Union, almost half of that coming from personal cars. Reducing the use of personal vehicles can drastically reduce carbon emissions, thereby having a positive impact on the environment. Through the Climate Change Act, the UK has committed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To achieve this goal, significant changes must be made.
Among the best ways to achieve this goal may be to increase the use of public transportation. The more people who use buses and public transportation, the lower our carbon emissions, our air quality will improve and people will also become more active since every bus trip includes a walk at least to the bus stop. Not only that, but public transportation also eases traffic, speeds up travel, and improves security in urban areas. Observations from criminology reports reveal that areas with public transport have an improvement in overall security and fewer crimes.
The characteristics of the public transport areas include well-lit areas and officers on patrol, which reduce crime rates by more than 80 percent and improve security. As well as benefiting the environment, public transportation offers financial benefits to the public. Commuting in one's car or owning a private or personal vehicle can cost up to four times as much as using public transportation. A personal car is a significant expense, with maintenance and other costs including parking fees, emissions tickets, and speeding tickets. By using public transportation, a person can save all the money that would otherwise be directed to such miscellaneous expenses associated with driving a personal vehicle.
