A lot of people shopping in Spain don't realise they may be able to claim back a portion of the tax included in everything they buy. Spain's VAT rate is 21%, and non-EU visitors are eligible to reclaim part of that on goods they're taking

home.

Before you work out whether it's worth pursuing at the airport, use our Spain VAT Refund Calculator to see what your savings could look like.

Estimate Your Spain VAT Refund

Use Our Spain VAT Refund Calculator

The quickest way to understand what you might get back is to run your purchases through ourSpain VAT Refund Calculator. No sign-up, no forms to fill in. Enter the amount you've spent and the calculator works out:

  • The VAT included in your total purchase price
  • Your estimated gross refund
  • The impact of processing fees on your net return
  • What you're likely to actually receive

It's useful to check before you buy, particularly on higher-value items where the difference between gross and net refund is worth knowing in advance. It's also helpful for comparing how different purchase amounts affect what lands back in your account.

Who Can Claim a VAT Refund in Spain?

VAT refunds in Spain are available to people who permanently reside in a country outside the European Union. That includes British visitors following Brexit, who qualify in full as non-EU residents.

To be eligible you need to:

  • Permanently reside outside the European Union
  • Be purchasing goods for personal use, not commercial purposes
  • Export the goods outside the EU within three months of purchase
  • Request the tax-free form (known as a DIVA or DER form) at the time of purchase
  • Have your passport with you when shopping to prove non-EU residency

Purchases made in the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla are excluded from the VAT refund scheme, as these territories are not subject to standard Spanish VAT. The scheme applies to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

One notable advantage Spain holds over several other European countries: Spain has abolished the minimum spend threshold, meaning you can claim a VAT refund on any amount - from a small purchase to a high-value item.

Always confirm with the retailer before purchasing, as not every store participates in the tax-free scheme.

How VAT Refunds Work in Spain

Every price you see displayed in a Spanish shop already includes VAT, called IVA in Spain. The standard rate is 21% and applies to fashion, electronics, jewellery, cosmetics, luxury goods, and most items tourists typically buy. A reduced rate of 10% covers restaurants, hotels, and certain food items, and a super-reduced rate of 4% applies to essentials like bread, books, and medicines.

The process in practice:

When you're ready to purchase, tell the retailer you'd like to claim a VAT refund before you pay. You'll need your passport. The retailer generates a DIVA form electronically, which is linked to Spain's digital customs system.

Before checking in at the airport, find the DIVA kiosks in the departure hall. Scan the barcode on your tax-free form. If approved, you can collect your refund at the tax-free operator desk in cash or have it returned to your card. Major airports including Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat both have DIVA kiosks installed.

The actual refund you receive will be lower than the 21% headline rate. According to Spain's official tourism authority, the refund can reach up to 15.7% of the purchase price, which is higher than many other European countries, though processing fees charged by operators like Global Blue and Planet reduce the net amount you receive.

Example: Shopping in Barcelona or Madrid

Say you're spending a day shopping in Barcelona and pick up a designer handbag, a pair of shoes, and some jewellery across different boutiques. Or you're in Madrid and make a significant purchase at El Corte Inglés or one of the luxury brand flagships along Serrano or Gran Vía. Each of those purchases may be eligible for a VAT refund.

What you actually get back depends on the total spent, the operator handling the refund, whether you take cash or card, and the specific fees applied. Rather than guess, put the numbers into ourSpain VAT Refund Calculator to get a personalised estimate before you head to the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VAT refund rate in Spain?

Spain's standard VAT rate is 21%, but tourists don't receive all of that back. The actual net refund, after processing fees charged by operators like Global Blue or Planet, typically works out at between 12% and 15.7% of the purchase price. The exact amount depends on the refund operator and whether you take cash or card.

Can tourists claim VAT back in Spain?

Yes. Non-EU residents, including UK visitors following Brexit, are eligible to claim a VAT refund on goods purchased in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, provided the items are exported outside the EU within three months of purchase. The DIVA electronic system handles validation at airports.

How do I calculate my Spain VAT refund?

Use our freeSpain VAT Refund Calculator. Enter your purchase amount and it provides an instant estimate of your gross refund, the impact of processing fees, and your likely net return. No registration required.

What is the minimum spend for tax-free shopping in Spain?

Spain has removed the previous minimum spend threshold, making it one of the most accessible tax-free shopping systems in Europe. Confirm with the individual retailer, as not every store participates in the scheme regardless of purchase amount.

Can I claim VAT back at Barcelona Airport?

Yes. Barcelona El Prat Airport has DIVA kiosks in the international departure areas. Arrive early enough to validate your tax-free forms before check-in. You can then collect your refund at the tax-free operator desk or have it returned to your card.

Can I claim VAT back at Madrid Airport?

Yes. Madrid Barajas Airport has DIVA kiosks in the departure halls and handles a high volume of tax-free refund claims. The process is the same as other Spanish airports - validate at the kiosk before check-in, then collect the refund from the operator desk.

Planning Luxury Shopping in Spain?

Knowing your VAT refund is part of shopping smart in Spain. For buyers looking to source specific luxury pieces - a handbag from a particular brand, a watch, or a piece of jewellery not easily found at home - the VAT saving is only one part of the equation. Finding the right piece at the right price, with proper authentication, is often the harder part.

TheWeCarryBags personal shopping service helps international clients source authenticated luxury handbags, watches, jewellery, and fashion across Spain and the UK. For buyers who'd rather have a trusted team handle sourcing and delivery than navigate boutiques in person, the service covers the full process end to end.
